In 1996, when South Country Treatment Centre was awarded a Gambling Program, staff wrote this poem to honor the closing ceremony in which a candle was lighted. Within each of us is a light.
THE LIGHT WITHIN
It is up to us to keep our light burning, protecting it from adversities and doubts. Never let your light burn out, nor allow others to put it out.
Today, you receive a green candle which symbolizes freedom and growth, and represents the light burning within. Hold the candle, knowing you can be free from the pain of addiction. Light your road to recovery with it. Surround yourself with its light and rejoice in the hope and growth from within.
As you journey along life’s path, there will be times when the light will flicker. Keep the light burning brightly, never letting it die. To let the light burn out will leave you in darkness, filled with confusion and despair…once again.
When things seem at its darkest, remember your victories as well as your downfalls. you are not alone. Light your candle and embrace the memories and friendships you have made. Recall the knowledge you have gained, and always believe you are the master of your destiny.
As the flame flickers, and shadows bounce around the room, let the warmth of the candle fill you with serenity and peace. Know you are growing as a person. Know you are free.
