HISTORY AND PROGRAM INFORMATION

South Country Treatment Centre is a residential treatment facility designed to help individuals in freeing themselves from their
addictions. Through care and counseling, the individual is taught various ways to deal with the social, emotional, physical and spiritual aspects of their lives.

The Centre is located on the eastern outskirts of Lethbridge in a country setting and is operated by a non-profit Society which is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Incorporated in 1976, the Centre is a twenty-one bed, non-medical facility. Staffed with trained personnel, the centre provides twenty-four hour supervision.

South Country Treatment Centre has provided a 4 week intensive Inpatient Treatment Program for Alcohol and Drugs for over 22 years. In November 1996, the first group of clients were admitted into our three week Inpatient Problem Gambling program. Program services are updated and changed, based on client feedback and new concepts introduced into the addictions field, enabling us to meet the needs of the individual client who access our treatment services.

The sleeping quarters are dormitory style. New arrivals should bring their personal
toiletries, casual clothing, runners and, if desired, a small amount of money for the canteen. Individuals should also bring towels, face
cloths, liquid laundry soap and anti static sheets. Linens such as sheets, blankets, bedspreads and pillows are provided.

There is a nominal non-refundable contribution to offset the cost of room and board. Anyone eighteen years of age and over who meet admission criteria can enter the Centre’s program. Prior to admission there must be a minimum of five days detoxification. A medical examination may be required. Admission is always voluntary.

Core funding is received from the Provincial Government through the Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission (AADAC).

The Centre works in cooperation with detox centres, out-patient services and recovery homes to form an integral part of the recovery process. Referrals for treatment are made through hospitals, detox centres, addiction agencies, AADAC, Social Services, legal system, EAP Programs and self-referral.
