INTRODUCTION TO INPATIENT TREATMENT FOR
PROBLEM GAMBLING PROGRAM
Clients develop skills and strategies that allow them to gain control over their lives. The goal of the program is to introduce lasting behavioral changes through learning and practicing new ways of thinking and acting, with a focus on self-awareness. Clients participate in experiential learning exercises aimed at developing coping skills such as decision making, problem solving, anger management, communication skills, stress management and relapse prevention strategies.
WEEK I
The focus of Week 1 is self-awareness, attaining an understanding of the addiction process and how gambling has affected the client on social, emotional, spiritual and financial levels. Emphasis is placed on the progression of the disease, self-esteem issues, guilt and shame, losses, financial planning, communication skills and stress management. Clients are introduced to Gamblers Anonymous which allows them to develop a support system throughout treatment as well as after discharge. Our Centre provides a room for Gamblers Anonymous meetings which are held every Sunday night.
WEEK II
Week II focuses on the identification of key areas in the clients’ lives, the dysfunctional learned behaviors which were used when trying to cope with these areas and the introduction of new and more effective skills. Key areas that will be addressed will include cognitive distortions, anger, family dynamics, relationships and co-dependency. New options for leisure and recreation are emphasized as clients strive for a more balanced lifestyle.
WEEK III
Week III continues to introduce new skills throughout this week and provides clients with information on key areas such as spirituality, nutrition and a balanced lifestyle. Emphasis is placed on relapse prevention and strategies for developing a high quality of recovery. Clients with the guidance of their
Counselor develop a personal care plan which defines goals, support systems and community contacts. The
Counselor adds recommendations to the care plan so clients have a clear understanding of how they will continue their recovery process after they leave treatment.
